Snap Crackle Pop

from A Break from Normality by Red Side Visible

/

about

Snap Crackle Pop is the oldest of the tunes on the record, and was actually intended as part of the first record. However, for some reason it never made it. Saying that, it has turned into a strong first tune on the record after multiple iterations.

This song, for the music nerd, was originally created with the melody using a 12 tone row.

Something I got into with this band was writing songs using 12 tone, but the row itself was split between the instruments, so the Alto might have 3 of the notes, Tenor has 3 of the notes, guitar has 3 of the notes and bass has 3 of the notes. And this may change and evolve as the pieces moves on.

By mixing up the line among the instruments I feel like it allows for some very interesting melodies, and strong melodies at that, that aren't so typical sounding, yet sound complete and make sense.

Certainly, I wasn't completely hardbound to the rules, but it is an interesting thing to try for a compositional tool.

As far as the performance goes, Chris Herald lays down an incredible sax solo, which is shortly followed by 3 very different vocal parts... first starting with what I call the "Star Wars Chorus" and then sort of a 90s rock rap part to screaming section then a sort of swing era "put a little sugar on it" something.

Overall, we go through some things on this song.

About the Lyrics... The inspiration was just that moment, we all get to some times, where we think we have things together, but we just kind of lose it, we snap... and the emotions that follow can vary all over the place from ecstatic to angry to silly to sad.

Ultimately it leads to vocals all over the place. Ha.

Stick around for the whole tune... there is a pretty interesting part where the saxes, trumpet, guitars, bass, violas/violins, are all playing intersecting but different lines that creates quite the neat little groove.

Finally... there is a video for this song on Youtube. It's a little all over the place too, but it seems fitting.

Hope you enjoy!
