about

I have had a dream, and it's an old one at that. This dream is to bring together great musicians for 1 day in the studio and record the record, let it be whatever it is. So many of our favorite jazz records were very much like this, often the bands didn't even know what they were playing till they got to the studio and someone recorded it. I'm sure the musicians weren't always happy with what came out, and frankly, sometimes the mixes weren't even that great (how many have the piano way too quiet??).

So here, I had booked studio time for my trio Stellar Regions, but the band couldn't make the date. I decided to keep the date and try out my idea. So I started asking a great group of musicians if they'd be interested in such an adventure. Luckily, I have some really incredible musicians joining in on this recording.

To ease us into the idea, I decided to pick up on one of the greatest musicians of all time that has gone beyond any genre and is the epitome of improvisation and composition in the music world. The composer and inspiration for this record was none other than Wayne Shorter.

So through the miracle of texting and messaging, I got the band together, called out some tunes, met at the studio and recorded everything in one afternoon. And what a surprise this record turned out to be.

I assure you this is not your normal jazz record, I wanted it to go to many other places. To play in the 50s/60s style would make absolutely zero sense for someone like Wayne Shorter who has been at the forefront of technology and mixing genres. Truly, I hope we did him justice by these, but I know they are in the right spirit.

Every song is written by Wayne Shorter. The arrangments were inspired by myself but accomplished by the group as a whole.

It took me longer than I hoped to get this ready to release, but I sat on it too long. I plan to do many more of these projects and haven't even thought about what's next. The original goal was 3 a year, so I better get rolling.

But first, without further delay, I present to you the first Mirth Co-Liberation Project: a tribute to Wayne Shorter.

Tim Mirth Akron, Ohio

Probably a musician by birth as I tapped my foot to life. I am into innovating. Improv is just how I am as a person in music and life. I think as musicians it is our responsibility to make advances and make changes, to push the envelope. You may say no one will listen, but if it is good they will. Keep trying I know I will, let us be creative and open minds. ... more
